ACTIVITY 4: PRESENTING AN ISSUE

Your group will create a short presentation to share with the class what you learned about your chosen issue, the media surrounding it, and what efforts are being made in the community. You will create an innovative solution to the issue which you will share in your presentation, and describe the tools you plan to use to acheive it. Your group should work together to complete one concrete action that you can share (see examples at bottom of page.) You will provide resources for students who want to explore further.

Choose a Tool:

BrainShark

  • Record audio over pictures

Prezi

  • A fun alternative to PowerPoint

HaikuDeck

  • Build a presentation with excellent graphics

Innovative Solutions- Questions to Consider:

Your group must share an innovative solution for the issue you have been reserching and reporting on. At this point, you will have compared news stories on the issue, followed social media regarding the issue and made contact with a group or leader who is working toward a goal or solution. It is time to take the information you have gathered and develop an action plan. Ask yourself What do I think would be the best course of action? How is this similar or dissimilar to other efforts that are being made in the community? Do I want to support these other actions or create something different? What resources are available to me and how can they be utilized? What would be the focus of my action and how far could it reach? Are my goals regarding this action realistic? What would I have to do to make them reachable?

Examples of concrete actions:

  • Write a letter to a community group or leader

  • Start a club or organization in your school

  • Write an editorial or opinion piece for the school newspaper

  • Create an online group on a social media site to bring attention to the issue

Your action should exemplify a formal writing technique, show respect and demonstrate your understanding of the issue.
